About the Encyclopedia

The Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization is the most comprehensive reference work on the history and legacy of Christianity. It will be essential for college and university libraries, as well as major public libraries, scholars and students. The three volumes will be an indispensable resource for many years for those studying not just Christianity, but all aspects of society shaped by Christianity, including art, literature, architecture, music, politics, and scholarship.

Scope and Content

The Encyclopedia of Christian Civilization will be organized in an A-Z format. However, the entries will be organized in a schematic that will show their inter-relationships. The principal categories will be: theological ideas, social ideas (including dignity of persons, liberty, truth, charity; role of women, human rights, etc); literature; music; worship; spirituality; art; architecture; education; politics; medicine; and the organization of society (celebrations, festivals, etc). Across these categories will be an awareness of Christianity as a global phenomenon with strong denominational and regional identities, all of which will be explored through individual entries.

All of the entries will present the best of current research in clear, concise, readable, and attractive form. All entries are designed to be suitable for experts and newcomers alike.
